Planning ahead with your Funeral Director
In the State of New Jersey, you may prearrange and prepay your funeral with a licensed funeral director. Many residents find that planning ahead relieves loved ones of a heavy burden and ensures that religious, cultural and personal wishes are clearly understood.
We strongly recommend that you sit down with a licensed funeral director and, when appropriate, with your attorney and financial advisor, to discuss:
- The type of service you would like and where it should be held.
- Religious, cultural or family traditions that are important to you.
- Burial, cremation or other lawful options that may be available.
- How funeral expenses will be handled or prepaid.
Who may make funeral decisions in
New Jersey?
New Jersey law generally allows the following people to make funeral and final disposition decisions for a decedent, in order of priority:
- The surviving spouse or domestic partner.
- A majority of the surviving adult children.
- The surviving parent or parents.
- A majority of the surviving brothers and sisters.
- Other next of kin according to degree of relationship.
- If there are no known relatives, another responsible person acting on behalf of the decedent.
